The great november debate: Thanksgiving vs Christmas Music
Ah, it’s that time of the year again. Time for our never-ending debates as to which holiday deserves our full attention during the month of November – Thanksgiving or Christmas. Which team are you on? Or, better yet, when is it appropriate to start listening to Christmas music? Before or after Thanksgiving?
As an immigrant to the United States, I’ve learned a lot about Thanksgiving in my adult years. Since it’s an American holiday marking an event from American history, we don’t celebrate Thanksgiving in Romania. Sure, we were familiar with the concept from having watched enough American TV, but it is not part of our culture.
Now this doesn’t mean that Romanian Christians aren’t thankful to God, ha! During the fall season we have our own “harvest” services when we deck the sanctuary with produce and sing hymns of gratitude to the Lord. But it’s quite different from American Thanksgiving: turkeys, cranberry sauce, apple pies and Black Friday deals.
Even though Thanksgiving is such a strong part of American culture, somehow it gets overshadowed by Christmas. Lights! Snowmen! Hot chocolate! MUSIC!
Ah, I think we’re on to something – can you name 10 Christmas carols? Easily.
But can you name 10 Thanksgiving songs? I’ll wait.
Still waiting…
This is why Christmas starts earlier and earlier each year. There’s so much more Christmas music out there, but not enough Thanksgiving music to counterbalance it. And people want to feel festive! I’m sure YOU want to feel festive during the colder months.
So I’m here to offer you all a solution.
