How Much Longer Shall We Wait
This original modern hymn is a song of lament; it is especially suitable for season of Lent, but it can also be sung on any other Sunday of the year when lament is appropriate. The text describes the agony of waiting when we have no hope in sight. In those moments all we can do is cry out: “How much longer, o, Lord? We’ve been faithful! We’ve prayed. And we’re still waiting for your deliverance.” Sometimes we wait a lifetime. And it’s possible in some cases we may never see God’s deliverance on this side of heaven. After all, the world is still deeply affected by sin and death. This is not God’s original plan for humanity, and so we grieve.
